Motherhood Mindfully: Caring Causes: Projects Abroad

This December 25th, Projects Abroad will have over 650 international volunteers working on volunteer projects overseas. These volunteers will be giving a different kind of gift: service to communities in need. They will be caring for orphans, building homes and classrooms, distributing food, helping in medical clinics, and much more. Projects Abroad volunteers of all ages undertake service work abroad on their own schedule throughout the year, choosing when and where they want to volunteer abroad.

Most Projects Abroad volunteers live with local host families - a homestay for the holidays for those abroad this Holiday Season. "I couldn't have asked for a better way to spend it!" says Nicole R. of her experience celebrating Christmas with her host family in Argentina.

While in Argentina, Nicole volunteered at a children's home. "For Christmas," she says, "I asked my parents to please tell my family that instead of buying me Christmas presents that I will open a month late, could they please give me the money so that I could spend it on presents for the children, and so this is what I did."

"It is extremely encouraging to see so many people choosing to volunteer abroad this time of year," says Thomas Pastorius, Jr., Vice President of Projects Abroad. "We hope they inspire more people to give their time and resources to serve communities in need at home and abroad throughout the year."

Projects Abroad was founded in 1992 by Dr. Peter Slowe, a geography professor, as a program for students to travel and work while on break from full-time study. The program had its genesis in post-USSR Romania, where students were given the chance to teach conversational English. After a few years just sending volunteers to Eastern Europe for teaching, the company expanded to sending volunteers of all ages around the world on a wide range of projects.

Projects Abroad is a global leader in short-term international volunteer programs with projects in 28 countries and recruitment offices in the UK, Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Holland, Hong Kong, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden and the United States.
