Former Kutztown football coach passes away

?

Former Kutztown University football head coach and Kutztown Hall of Fame member George Baldwin passed away Thursday afternoon. He was 90 years old.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Baldwin was the Golden Bears head coach for 14 years (1973-1987). He took over the KU program in 1973 and became the winningest coach in school history. He compiled a school-record 61 victories and led KU to six winning seasons, including a school-best 7-2 in 1977. He led the Golden Bears to their first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division title in 1980.

Baldwin was inducted into the Kutztown Athletics Hall of Fame in 1993.

He sent several players to NFL camps, including running backs Bruce Harper and Doug Dennison, and wide receiver Andre Reed, a Dieruff graduate. Harper and Dennison had successful careers with the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys, respectively, in the 1970s. Reed earned All-Pro status with the Buffalo Bills and played in four consecutive Super Bowls.

Baldwin graduated from Bowling Green (OH) in 1947 and was inducted into its Athletics Hall of Fame in 1991. He earned letters in football in 1941, 1942, and 1946 while he was a baseball letter-winner in 1942 and 1946. He was a two-way guard in football and was a second baseman in baseball.

His coaching career spanned 41 years before his retirement from Kutztown in 1987. He had a 69-26-4 record and captured six state championships in 11 seasons at Morrow (N.J.) High School (1948-62).

He had coaching stints at Bloomfield (N.J.) High School and in the Englewood School District before heading to West Chester University for six years as an assistant coach. He held several semi-pro coaching jobs and spent the 1984 season with the New England Patriots as an offensive assistant.
