3-vehicle crash preceded fatal mass pileup in Fla.

The Florida Highway Patrol says there was a three-vehicle crash just hours before a series of pileups killed 10 people and injured 18 others on the same stretch of Interstate 75.

According to the report released Monday, heavy smoke and fog resulted in low visibility along I-75 south of Gainesville late Saturday. About 11:55 p.m. Saturday, a tractor-trailer hit a Toyota in the northbound lanes. A Lexus then hit the back of the truck.

Authorities say a passenger in the Lexus was sent to the hospital in serious condition.

The Highway Patrol closed I-75 and nearby U.S. 441 a short time later, due to worsening road conditions. But the highway was then reopened early Sunday and a series of pileups began around 3:45 a.m., some of them fatal.

'People were screaming'
Steven R. Camps and some friends were driving home on the interstate when they heard "cars hitting each other."

"People were crying, People were screaming. It was crazy," the Gainesville resident told The Associated Press hours later. "If I could give you an idea of what it looked like, I would say it looked like the end of the world."

Some of the road's asphalt melted.

Lt. Patrick Riordan, a Florida Highway Patrol spokesman, described the pileup as "probably the worst one I've seen in 27 years."

Riordan said investigators are still trying to determine how many separate collisions occurred on the interstate.

The pileups happened around 3:45 a.m. Sunday on both sides of I-75. When rescuers first arrived, they could only listen for screams and moans because the poor visibility made it difficult to find victims in wreckage that was strewn for nearly a mile.

"That's a very scary thing when you can't see anything and hear the squealing of tires and don't know if 2,000 pounds of metal is coming at you,? Alachua County Sheriff's Sgt. Todd Kelly told the Gainesville Sun.

At least a dozen cars and six tractor-trailers were involved, and some burst into flames.

Hours later, twisted, burned-out vehicles were scattered across the pavement, with smoke still rising from the wreckage.

Cars appeared to have smashed into the big rigs and, in one case, a motor home. Some cars were crushed beneath the heavier trucks.

Fog bank
Reporters who were allowed to view the site saw bodies still inside a burned-out Grand Prix. One tractor-trailer was burned down to its skeleton, charred pages of books and magazines in its cargo area. And the tires of every vehicle had burned away, leaving only steel belts.

Before Camps hit the fog bank, a friend who was driving ahead of him in a separate vehicle called to warn of the road conditions. The friend said he had just seen an accident and urged Camps to be careful as he approached the Paynes Prairie area, just south of Gainesville.

A short time later, Camps said, traffic stopped along the northbound lanes.

"You couldn't see anything. People were pulling off the road," he said.

Camps said he began talking about the road conditions to a man in the car stopped next to him when another vehicle hit that man's car.

Explosions
The man's vehicle was crushed under a semi-truck stopped in front of them. Camps said his car was hit twice, but he and another friend were able to jump out. They took cover in the grass on the shoulder of the road.

All around them, cars and trucks were on fire, and they could hear explosions as the vehicles burned.

"It was happening on both sides of the road, so there was nowhere to go. It blew my mind," he said, explaining that the scene "looked like someone was picking up cars and throwing them."

Authorities had not released the names of victims Sunday evening, but said one passenger car had four fatalities. A "tour bus-like" vehicle also was involved in the pileup, police said.

All six lanes of the interstate were closed most of Sunday as investigators surveyed the site and firefighters put out the last of the flames.

The northbound lanes were reopened at about 5:30 p.m. The Gainesville Sun reported that the southbound lanes reopened at around 11 p.m. on Sunday.

No sign of lightning
At some point before the pileup, police briefly closed the highway because of fog and smoke. The road was reopened when visibility improved, police said. Riordan said he was not sure how much time passed between the reopening of the highway and the first crash.

A spokeswoman for the Florida Forest Service, Ludie Bond, said the fire began Saturday, and investigators were trying to determine whether the blaze had been intentionally set. She said there were no controlled burns in the area and no lightning.

Bond also said the fire had burned 62 acres and was contained but still burning Sunday. A similar fire nearby has been burning since mid-November because the dried vegetation is so thick and deep. No homes are threatened.

Four years ago, heavy fog and smoke were blamed for another serious crash.

In January 2008, four people were killed and 38 injured in a series of similar crashes on Interstate 4 between Orlando and Tampa, about 125 miles south of Sunday's crash. More than 70 vehicles were involved in those crashes, including one pileup that involved 40 vehicles.

The Associated Press, Reuters and msnbc.com staff contributed to this report.

Though Sling Media has long been offering apps for Android phones and tablets, Kindle Fire owners have until now been left out in the cold (you know, the whole lack-of-Android-Market-access thing). Ahead in Florida, Romney turns focus back to Obama

(AP) ? Mitt Romney strode into the final 48 hours of the pivotal Florida Republican primary campaign with the confidence of a resurgent front-runner, predicting he'll win in Tuesday's voting while looking ahead to future contests.

His main rival Newt Gingrich hustled around the state, trying to rekindle the energy that lifted him to victory in the South Carolina primary on Jan. 21. He acknowledged the possibility he could lose here but vowed to fight Romney to the party's national convention this summer.

Outspent 3-1 on television advertising in Florida during the campaign's closing week, Gingrich was working the free media by chatting up reporters on Saturday and scheduling appearances on two nationally televised Sunday talk shows.

Gingrich has been under heavy attack from Romney and allies of the former Massachusetts governor. Romney had spent the past several days, including during two Florida debates, sharply criticizing Gingrich's discipline, temperament and ethics during and after his time as the House speaker in the 1990s.

Romney changed his line of attack on Saturday to refocus his criticism on President Barack Obama.

"He's detached from reality," Romney said. He criticized Obama's plan to cut the size of the military and what he described as the administration's weak foreign policy.

Gingrich's South Carolina momentum has largely evaporated amid the pounding he has sustained from Romney's campaign and the pro-Romney group called Restore Our Future. They have spent some $6.8 million in ads criticizing Gingrich in the Florida campaign's final week. Polls show Romney solidly ahead.

Gingrich planned to campaign Sunday in central Florida.

Romney had a series of rallies planned for south Florida. He was also looking ahead to the next-up Nevada caucuses and was airing ads in that state ahead of the Feb. 4 contest.

Gingrich sought to regain momentum with the endorsement of Herman Cain, a tea party favorite and former presidential hopeful whose White House effort foundered amid sexual harassment allegations.

Gingrich has been put on the defensive under Romney's withering attack. Gingrich responded by describing the former Massachusetts governor as "dishonest" and questioning his GOP bona fides.

His pledge to stay in the race suggests Republicans could be in for a long winter and spring if money continues to flow into Gingrich's campaign.

A third GOP contestant, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, has made an effort to campaign in the Sunshine State but trails Romney and Gingrich by a wide margin. He cancelled his Sunday events after his 3-year-old daughter Bella was hospitalized. She suffers from a serious genetic condition.

Texas congressman Ron Paul has invested little in the Florida race and is looking ahead to Nevada.

A sixteen-year-old girl has no business being an assassin--its doubtful that a hormonal and developing child could muster the strength to counter the kick of a high-velocity rifle, much less grapple with anyone seriously enough to inflict harm with any sort of blade. Who does she assassinate, the infirm and elderly? Maybe she only goes after those who are comatose?

I guess it takes only a few years to learn the trade of an assassin, huh? Proper care and maintenance of weapons, the art of stealth and deception, not to mention getting around that little thing called the law, and those professional people who are trained and paid to prevent people from being assassinated with any regularity. This girl's got some pretty effed-up parents if they are merely 'not happy' with the state of things.

Greetings. My name is Zero.

Now, I am about to make an unusual request, and I shall not be unhappy if it is not fulfilled.

I would very much like to join this roleplay. It has been some time since I have been in an assassin roleplay, and I have an ideal character for one (he actually happens to be the protagonist of a novel I am writing). Although he is not an assassin himself; he is rather an extremely proficient vigilante serial killer, although his methods greatly resemble those of an assassin.

However, there is a slight... issue in my joining of this roleplay.

You see, I am without a computer.

My laptop recently got rained on (LONG - and extremely entertaining - story there), and thus, I cannot post with any form of regularity. I am presently writing from my father's laptop, which I have temporarily... appropriated... for my use to post on my few remaining roleplays, but I am certainly unable to join in on a full-on roleplay like this.

Therefore, my request is thusly: I wish to reserve a slot (either someone who is pursuing Gracie, or a schoolmate - either can work) for my character. I inform you that even if I somehow post my character (which I may do) in the near future, I will be unable to join the roleplay for some time, possibly over two weeks.

My case is as follows: I am a skilled writer, as you can see from my previous roleplays, and as you can surely see from this post, I have an extremely good grasp of the english language, not to mention impeccable grammar (at least, I believe so - correct me if there are any mistakes in this post). When I am able to do so, I tend to post with regularity, and my posts are usually quite long.

I do not expect to be given a slot in this roleplay, but I saw fit to ask anyway.

Regards,

- Zero

Man pleads not guilty to trying to kill Obama (AP)

WASHINGTON ? An Idaho man accused of firing shots at the White House pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges that he tried to assassinate President Barack Obama.

A lawyer for Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez entered the plea on his client's behalf during a brief appearance in U.S. District Court in Washington. Ortega did not say anything during the proceedings and will remain held without bond. He has another court date next month.

Prosecutors say Ortega used an assault rifle with an attached scope to fire a series of shots at the White House from long range on the night of Nov. 11. Obama and his wife, Michelle, were out of town at the time. In the months before the shooting, investigators say, he had had become obsessed with Obama, referred to him as the anti-Christ and told at least one person that he planned to "take care of" the president.

Prosecutors say he drove away after the shooting and crashed his car, then took off on foot. Authorities searching his car found a semi-automatic rifle, 12 spent shell casings and three fully-loaded magazines, and bullet impact points were located in the area of the White House that's known to be the living quarters of the First Family. Authorities recovered a bullet from a window frame on the Truman Balcony.

He was arrested on Nov. 16 at the same hotel where he had stayed before the shooting, authorities say.

Ortega, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, was indicted last week on 17 counts including trying to assassinate the president, transporting a firearm across state lines and assaulting officers or employees of the United States with a deadly weapon. Those charges refer to three Secret Service employees who authorities say were on the grounds of the White House at the time of the shooting.

Ortega's federal public defender, David Bos, has previously argued that prosecutors have not established that Ortega was present at the shooting or that the president was the target of the attack. Bos declined to comment after the hearing.

Ortega could face up to life in prison if convicted of trying to assassinate the president.

The hearing took place in the same week that a lawyer for John Hinckley, who was found not guilty by reason of insanity in a 1981 assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan, is making his case for extended time away from the psychiatric hospital where Hinckley has been confined.

US Supreme Court rules GPS tracking requires a warrant

Paul Marks, senior technology correspondent

Stand down those GPS jammers, Americans. The justices of the US Supreme Court have ruled that the police?will indeed continue to need a search warrant?to install a GPS tracker on a suspect's car. The decision means police cannot treat GPS tracking as a simple extension of "tailing" someone, which does not require a warrant.?The justices had been asked to consider dropping the need for a search warrant by the US Department of Justice after a nightclub owner had a life jail term quashed by a lower court. The latter did so on the grounds that a location tracking device - which gathered data on the suspect's whereabouts crucial to his conviction - had been illegally acquired. Although a warrant had initially been issued for the tracking, it had expired - and the DoJ decided to fight the need for one, saying GPS beacons are latterday crime-fighting tools the law simply needs to catch up with. The argument did not sit well with the justices - some described GPS tracking as Orwellian, worrying that even Supreme Court justices could be unknowingly tailed. "The government's attachment of the GPS device to the vehicle, and its use of that device to monitor the vehicle's movements, constituted a search under the Fourth Amendment," the justices ruled today. The Fourth Amendment protects US citizens' homes against unreasonable search and seizure by the state.

"A majority of the Court acknowledged that advancing technology, like cell phone tracking, gives the government unprecedented ability to collect, store and analyse an enormous amount of information about our private lives," says ACLU legal director Steven Shapiro. "Today's decision suggests that the court is prepared to address that problem."

When the case was heard last November, Twitter was awash in chatter about illegal GPS jammers and how they could foil warrantless tracking. Hopefully that has now been stayed - as widespread jammer use could ruin GPS reception, not only for satnavs but also for cellphone networks which use the GPS satellite network's over-the-air atomic clock signals for timing purposes.?

The privacy lobby's attention now swings to Congress, where the Geolocation Privacy and Surveillence Act (GPS Act) is pending discussion in both the Senate and the House. ACLU hopes the precedent set by the Supreme Court will similarly prevent cellphone-derived location data being seized by law enforcement without a warrant.

Missing snowmobiler rescued but second found dead (Reuters)

DENVER (Reuters) ? One of two snowmobilers missing following an avalanche in northwestern Colorado was rescued after an exhaustive search on Monday but the other was found dead, authorities said.

Missi White, spokeswoman for Jackson County Search and Rescue, said one of the two snowmobilers was rescued and taken to a local hospital after being spotted from the air by searchers.

White said she had no further information on the snowmobiler who was found dead following the search.

The two snowmobilers, who were not immediately identified by authorities, had gone missing in a snowslide at 10,180-foot Buffalo Pass.

The incident followed a weekend in which two skiers were killed in avalanches at separate Colorado ski resorts over the weekend.

Three juveniles on Vail Mountain were skiing in an area closed off due to the avalanche danger when the trio triggered an avalanche on Sunday, said Jesse Mosher, spokeswoman for the Eagle County Sheriff's Office.

Taft Conlon, 13, died from chest injuries he suffered in the slide, Eagle County Coroner Kara Bettis said.

The other two juveniles were not seriously injured.

At the Winter Park ski resort northwest of Denver, a 28-year-old man was reported missing by his skiing partners late on Sunday afternoon, resort spokeswoman Mistalynn Lee said.

The ski patrol located the man, who was "unresponsive," on an expert ski trail. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, Lee said.

Grand County Coroner Brenda Bock identified the dead man as Christopher Norris of Evergreen, Colorado. Bock said an autopsy concluded that he died of asphyxiation.

Brian Lazar, deputy director of the Colorado Avalanche Center, said a thin early winter snowpack combined with recent heavy snowfalls and high winds on Colorado slopes had created the dangerous conditions.

The risk of a natural avalanche lessened on Monday, he said, but human-triggered slides are likely.

Any snow-covered slope of 30 degrees or steeper is prone to avalanches, Lazar said, adding, "If you are venturing into the backcountry, choose your route carefully."

A Pacific storm moving into the Rockies on Monday will bring more snow, but forecasts are for light accumulations which shouldn't elevate the avalanche risk, Lazar said.

South Carolina Election: State Succeeds At Making Voice Heard On Primary Day

By BRUCE SMITH, ASSOCIATED PRESS

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- South Carolina Republicans established their presidential primary more than three decades ago as way to raise the state's national political profile. They succeeded wildly.

Ever since 1980, when Ronald Reagan won, every candidate who has won the GOP primary in this Southern state of fewer than 5 million has gone on to claim the Republican presidential nomination. State party officials are fond of saying the road to the White House passes straight through South Carolina.

Harry Dent, the late South Carolinian who engineered Richard Nixon's 1968 Southern strategy of appealing to Southern conservatives, and Dan Ross, the late state GOP chairman, are generally credited with planting the seeds for the primary.

Former Gov. James B. Edwards, who in the 1970s was the first GOP governor of the state in modern times, says no one at the time thought the presidential primary would morph into what it has become today bringing all the major GOP candidates to crisscross the state with hundreds of reporters in tow.

"I wasn't that foresighted and I don't know that anybody else was or not. I doubt it," said Edwards, who is now 84.

South Carolina is a different battleground from the corn fields of Iowa and predominantly white New Hampshire. The state is poorer, more conservative and has a population that is 28 percent black. Voters don't register by parties so Democrats and independents enter the mix in the primary.

The state has also proven a second-chance for candidates who have stumbled in earlier contests with their different constituencies.

In the GOP primary in 2000, Texas Gov. George W. Bush beat Sen. John McCain of Arizona after he was upset by McCain in New Hampshire. Four years ago, it was McCain who capped a comeback following a dismal showing in Iowa with a win in New Hampshire and another in South Carolina.

Republican state Sen. John Courson, elected to the Senate in 1984, was a Reagan delegate in 1976 when Reagan lost the nomination to President Gerald Ford. Reagan supporters wanted a primary in 1980 because they believed Reagan would fare better against former Texas Gov. John Connally in an open primary than in a traditional nominating convention.

Courson said two elements have helped to make the primary a success: It's always been the first in the South and has always been held on a Saturday, which party leaders knew would bring conservative Democrats to the polls.

"We had to be the first-in-the-South primary. If any other Southern large state, like Texas or Florida, were before us, we would not see the candidates," he said.

What is lost with all the candidates trooping through is that the primary also helped build the modern Republican Party in South Carolina. Until 2008, the party ran the primary using volunteers. Now it's the job of the State Election Commission.

Getting volunteers involved was central to building the GOP.

"If you start working with the party and working at the polls and organizing the primary, that gives you the stimulus to be a real party," Edwards said.

Much of the proof is in the office-holding.

In 1980, when the GOP presidential primary was established, only 23 of the 170 South Carolina state lawmakers and one of the nine statewide office-holders were Republican. Today, there are 103 GOP lawmakers and the party holds all nine statewide offices.

EU tax doesn't fly in Canada

By DANIEL PROUSSALIDIS PARLIAMENTARY BUREAU

Posted 4 hours ago

OTTAWA -- As American airlines start imposing a $6 carbon emission surcharge on airfares to Europe, travellers on Canadian airlines are getting a bit of a reprieve.

Air Canada and Air Transat have confirmed they have not yet applied any surcharge, even though the European Union now charges airlines landing at EU airports for carbon emissions.

But that could change.

"Airlines are going to be looking at what they're going to do now in terms of mitigating that cost impact," George Petsikas, president of the National Airline Council of Canada, said.

He adds Canadian airlines are complying with the EU's emissions trading scheme "under protest" and by early 2013, airlines will know how many carbon credits they'll have to buy under the European scheme.

Germany's Lufthansa expects its compliance costs to surpass $167 million, which it will pass on to passengers, while Air France/ KLM could be forced to shell out up to $130 million.

Canada's transport minister has already warned Canadian airfares to Europe could rise.

"This new tax will hurt an industry that is important to all of our economies and is expected to drive up prices on consumers by as much as $15 a ticket," Minister of Transport Denis Lebel said in a statement last month.

China has said its airlines refuse to pay an "emissions tax" while the state-run Xinhua News Agency has warned of a possible trade war over the issue.

The idea of Canada also threatening a trade war doesn't fly with Petsikas.

"Our view is that we hope it doesn't come to, obviously, a major trade war," he said. "Nobody wants that -- certainly not consumers, certainly not airlines."

Petsikas says he hopes the Europeans will change course and come to a carbon emissions agreement acceptable to non-EU countries in discussions with the

International Civil Aviation Organization.

Polar growth at the bacterial scale reveals potential new targets for antibiotic therapy

Polar growth at the bacterial scale reveals potential new targets for antibiotic therapy

Wednesday, January 18, 2012

An international team of microbiologists led by Indiana University researchers has identified a new bacterial growth process -- one that occurs at a single end or pole of the cell instead of uniform, dispersed growth along the long axis of the cell -- that could have implications in the development of new antibacterial strategies.

Based on past detailed studies of rod-shaped bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis, it has been assumed that most bacteria grow by binary fission, a dispersed mode of growth involving insertion of new cell wall material uniformly along the long axis of the cell. Growth requires breaking the cell wall at numerous places along the cylinder to allow insertion of new cell wall material, enabling uniform elongation of the cell, with the process culminated by cleavage at the mid-point of the cell to create two symmetric new cells.

The new research published today, Jan. 17, in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reports on the surprising discovery that cell growth in a large group of rod-shaped bacteria occurs by insertion of new cell wall material only at a single end, or pole, of the cell rather than by the dispersed mode of growth. The cell wall of the progenitor cell remains largely intact, and all of the new cell wall material is partitioned into the new cell.

Polar growth of four bacterial species -- the plant symbiont Sinorhizobium meliloti, the plant pathogen Agrobacterium tumefaciens and the human pathogens Brucella abortus and Ochrobactrum anthropi -- was observed using time-lapse microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The four related bacteria used in the study are all members of a large and diverse class of bacteria called the Alphaproteobacteria. The results reported suggest that polar growth is broadly distributed among many different bacterial taxa, including groups outside the Alphaproteobacteria.

There could be a number of reasons why polar growth emerged and has remained conserved and persistent in bacteria, the researchers believe. The process may act as an aid in anchoring damaged material to only the aging mother cell; it could serve as a tool for conservation of energy by constraining growth to a single region of the cell; and ensuring that newborn cells are composed of newly synthesized outer membrane proteins may help pathogens avoid detection by host immune systems.

"As a consequence of polar growth, the two bacterial cells are actually markedly different," said lead author Yves Brun, the Clyde Culbertson Professor of Biology in IU Bloomington's College of Arts and Sciences. "One cell contains all of the old cell wall and surface molecules, including those with damage. In contrast, the other cell is composed of newly synthesized, relatively pristine material."

Ensuring that some cells are composed of newly synthesized surface molecules may help bacteria vary their surface composition, and the ability to do so rapidly is thought to be advantageous for adapting to new environments. Since the defense systems of many plant and animal hosts recognize bacterial cell surfaces, rapid modification of the cell surface may allow bacteria like those used in the experiments to evade detection by the host cell's defense systems.

"These findings make it abundantly clear that the widely accepted binary fission model is not a general rule and suggest that polar growth may be broadly distributed," said IU biology professor Clay Fuqua, one of the IU co-authors. "Therefore, future work aimed at understanding the molecular mechanism underlying polar growth should provide attractive targets for the development of new antibacterial strategies."

Understanding the mechanisms of bacterial growth has enabled advances in strategies to limit the proliferation of bacteria that cause disease. Penicillin, for example, targets actively growing cells by directly inhibiting the proteins responsible for the synthesis of the cell wall and that are required for cell growth. New insights into bacterial cell growth have also been utilized to promote growth of certain bacteria used in oil spill remediation and eradicating disease-carrying mosquitoes.

Russia asks if US radar ruined space probe (AP)

MOSCOW ? Russian media say space experts will look into the possibility that a U.S. radar station may have inadvertently interfered with the failed Mars moon probe that later plummeted to Earth.

The newspaper Kommersant on Tuesday cited unnamed experts as saying radiation from a U.S. station in the Marshall Islands could have knocked out the probe's electronic systems soon after its launch in November. The probe became stuck in Earth orbit for two months.

The state news agency RIA Novosti quoted Yury Koptev, former head of the Russian space agency, as saying investigators under his charge will test the effects of radiation similar to U.S. radar emissions on a model probe.

The probe fell to Earth on Sunday in the vicinity of Chile and Brazil, but no confirmed impact sites have been reported.

Trend against outsourcing brings jobs back from China

Manufacturing is now underway at Lincolnton Furniture in North Carolina.

By Sopan Deb
Rock Center

The United States may be on the verge of bringing back manufacturing jobs from China.

Harold Sirkin, along with Michael Zinser and Douglas Hohner (all experts from the Boston Consulting Group ? a leading business advising firm), says that outsourcing manufacturing to China is not as cheap as it used to be and that the United States is poised to bring back jobs from China. The three consultants first reached this conclusion in a recently published study titled ?Made in America, Again: Why Manufacturing Will Return to the U.S.?

Many companies, especially in the auto and furniture industries, moved plants overseas once China opened its doors to free trade and foreign investment in the last few decades. Labor was cheaper for American companies ? less than $1 per hour according to the BCG report. Today, labor costs in China have risen dramatically, and shipping and fuel costs have skyrocketed. As China?s economy has expanded, and China has built new factories all across the country, the demand for workers has risen. As a result, wages are up as new companies compete to hire the best workers.

?The tilt is now getting lower,? Sirkin says. ?We think somewhere around 2015 it?ll look flat and may start to tilt in the U.S. favor at that point in time.?

By 2015, ?it will only be about 10 percent cheaper to manufacture in China.

?We have to recognize one thing,? Sirkin told NBC?s Harry Smith in an interview to air Monday on Rock Center with Brian Williams. ?The average Chinese worker is about a quarter as productive as the average U.S. worker.?

?It?ll be a major impact. Our projections are, when you take the manufacturing jobs and then the service jobs that get created alongside those, that we will add two to three million jobs to the U.S. workforce.?

The U.S. is already seeing examples of this ? starting ?in Lincolnton, North Carolina.

Rock Center has been following Bruce Cochrane of Lincolnton Furniture as he brings his family business back to the U.S. and re-opens the family furniture plant. Cochrane was invited to the White House last week for a forum on job creation with President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.

?Now, you don't have be a big manufacturer to insource jobs,? Obama said.? ?Bruce Cochrane's family had manufactured furniture in North Carolina for five generations.? But in 1996, as jobs began shifting to Asia, the family sold their business, and Bruce spent time in China and Vietnam as a consultant for American furniture makers.? But while he was there, he noticed something he didn't expect: their consumers actually wanted to buy things made in America. So he came home and started a new company, Lincolnton Furniture, which operates out of the old family factories. He's even re-hired many of the former workers from his family business. ?

According to BCG, another manufacturer, Sleek Audio, moved production of its headphones from Chinese suppliers to a plant in Florida. Ford Motor Company is bringing back 2,000 jobs from China after striking an agreement with the United Auto Workers. Sirkin says it?s good news for the economy even though wages will be lower in those jobs than they were previously.

Sirkin believes fears that United States manufacturing is in decline are overstated and notes that the U.S. is still a manufacturing giant. In 2010, China provided 19.8 percent of global manufacturing value added. The U.S. accounted for a marginally less 19.4 percent, which, according to Boston Consulting, was ?a share that has declined only slightly over the past three decades.?

Editor's Note: Harry Smith's full report, 'Made in America,' airs Monday, January 16 at 10pm/9c on NBC's Rock Center with Brian Williams.

Court dismisses fears of 'creeping Sharia' that inspired Oklahoma ban (+video)

The Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld an injunction against an Oklahoma referendum banning the use of Islamic Sharia law in courts and said there's no evidence of such influence on US courts.

The Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against a proposed constitutional amendment in Oklahoma that bans the use of the Islamic legal code known as Sharia, calling the popular measure discriminatory and saying there is no evidence that US courts are influenced by those Muslim legal precepts.

The Denver-based court, which is not known for holding progressive views, on Tuesday upheld a lower court injunction against the proposed amendment, which passed in 2010 by 70 percent of Oklahoma voters in a referendum. The court decision, sparked by a lawsuit brought by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, repudiated, in part, the fear of ?creeping Sharia? that has inspired over 20 proposed state laws and has infused some Republican campaign rhetoric.

?Appellants do not identify any actual problem the challenged amendment seeks to solve,? the three judge panel wrote. ?Indeed, they admitted at the preliminary injunction hearing that they did not know of even a single instance where an Oklahoma court had applied Sharia law or used the legal precepts of other nations or cultures, let alone that such applications or uses had resulted in concrete problems in Oklahoma."

The court concluded that the law also interferes with the Constitution's First Amendment ban on religious discrimination, pointing out that the law focuses on Sharia ?while not prohibiting people of other faiths to rely on the legal precepts of their religions.?

The ruling does not settle the case, but reaffirms a decision made by an Oklahoma state judge to grant an injunction against the law taking effect.

At the same time, the decision may not lay to rest concerns among many Americans that the US legal system is susceptible to influence by legal ideas embodied in foreign cultures and religions, such as Sharia. Sharia law uses as its foundation the Koran and Mohammed's teachings.

Bombs hit Shi'ite pilgrims in Iraq, kill 15: sources (Reuters)

BAGHDAD (Reuters) ? Two bombs exploded near Shi'ite pilgrims travelling through Iraq's capital Monday, killing at least 15 people and wounding 52 others, police and hospital sources said.

Thousands of Shi'ites are making the annual pilgrimage to the holy city of Kerbala for the Arbain religious rite amid Iraq's worst political crisis in a year after the Shi'ite-led government moved against two prominent Sunni politicians.

The crisis threatens to unravel Iraq's fragile coalition government of Shi'ite, Sunni and Kurdish factions and has raised fears of renewed sectarian violence.

The blasts struck the Bayaa district in southwestern Baghdad, where nine people were killed and at least 28 were wounded; and the northern Shaab district where the toll was six dead and 24 wounded, police and hospital sources said.

Pilgrims have been under attack for days in Iraq.

The explosion of two roadside bombs in southern Baghdad earlier in the day killed at least two people and wounded 12, while a sticky bomb attached to a bus carrying Afghan pilgrims blew up late Sunday, wounding nine.

Last Thursday bombings in mainly Shi'ite areas killed at least 73 people and wounded scores of others. The largest toll occurred at a police checkpoint near the southern city of Nassiriya where a suicide bomber killed 44 and wounded 81.

5 Insurance Startups To Watch

Silicon Valley startups often conjure up images of ping pong tables frequented by scruffy developers in black jeans and Marxian t-shirts. Insurance companies are perceived to be much less hip, staffed by folks with side parts behind big wooden desks inside industrially-lit offices. But a recent trend has seen the proliferation of startups in Silicon Valley starting to shake up the insurance world.

We scoured the landscape and found the five most interesting new companies in the space and highlighted why each is so promising.

Cake Health. This startup brings a bit of transparency to consumer health insurance plans. At a time when much of the cost and management of health insurance benefits are getting transferred from employers to individuals, Cake Health can remind you how and when to use the free services on your plan (such as an eye exam or a dental cleaning), help you understand surprise invoices, and even give tips how to negotiate a bill down after receiving it.

?Our goal at Cake Health is to provide smarter choices that lead to better health decisions, not avoidance,? says founder Rebecca Woodcock.

CoverHound is shooting to become the Kayak.com of insurance. In a landscape littered with crummy sites, CoverHound presents a clean, safe experience for insurance shoppers. They?ve just opened up an agency in Southern California and will now sell policies directly to consumers.

?Until now, the internet has failed to give users a positive, transparent experience when shopping for insurance. We provide instant and actionable rates from major carriers, so they can pick the best policy for themselves,? says Basil Enan founder and CEO.

Crimson Informatics is also bringing a disruptive technology to the auto insurance market. The company's hardware and software gather data on driver behavior, giving insurance carriers more granular metrics on which to base quotes. Insurance rates will no longer be wedded to old binaries like gender and education, and can instead be based on actual behavior behind the wheel.

CEO Steve McKay says "Usage based insurance represents a big leap forward. Crimson is a leader in analyzing driving data to identify and quantify trends and risks to the insurer, and by giving drivers feedback, it?s possible for them to change risky behaviors and reduce accidents.?

Stik. While not focused solely on insurance, San Francisco-based Stik is helping people find service providers recommended by their friends. Stik allows you to search your friends' Facebook connections for highly-rated providers and sort them based on location, reviews, and keywords. They are focused on insurance, mortgage, and real estate, with more verticals on the way soon.

"We are bringing old-fashioned word of mouth into the Facebook era," says Stik co-founder Nathan Labenz.

Wisemuv.net helps insurers reach existing customers at key times in their lifecycle using an educational, fun digital way. They provide a fast conversion process for agents to bundle additional policies and prevent carrier churn.

"Our data shows customer satisfaction increased by 37.4% over baseline, while increasing estimated longevity by over 29 months at one of our Fortune 500 clients,? says Founder and CEO Chirag Pancholi. Wisemuv is banking that automating the agent-customer relationship can also bring tremendous predictive data benefits.

* * *

Insurance can?t change too much: it will always represent protection for your family and its possessions. But these new companies are democratizing the way insurance is dispensed, providing carriers with precise insights that will create fairer rates -- while giving customers more freedom to choose the best policies.

(AP) ? Get ready for another dose of Blake Shelton as country's hottest leading man joins Reba McEntire again this year as co-host of The Academy of Country Music Awards.

The 47th annual show will be held Sunday, April 1, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Like Shelton, the ACM's Fan Jam also will return for a second year. This time Zac Brown Band will host the parallel event at the Mandalay Events Center.

The academy also announced Lionel Richie will host "ACM Presents: Lionel Richie and Friends ? A Lifetime of Hits," its annual television special taped the day after the awards and aired later on CBS. Kenny Chesney, Jason Aldean, Lady Antebellum, Kenny Rogers, Rascal Flatts, Martina McBride and others will join Richie on the show.

The appearance will continue country music's love affair with Richie, who is preparing to release a country duets album this spring called "Tuskegee." Most of today's top country stars have said recently that Richie is an influence and his recent appearances at celebrity events have drawn crowds of star-struck celebrities.

"Being a part of the ACMs is an honor," Richie said in an email to the Associated Press. "I am excited to share such an amazing evening with some of my closest friends."

Shelton was an easy-going foil for his good friend Reba last year in his first extended television appearance. It turned out to be a sign of things to come as Shelton rode his appearance on singing contest reality show "The Voice" as a coach later that month to a new level of popularity.

Sugarland hosted the new Fan Jam event and after party at Mandalay Bay in 2010 with occasional live remotes that appeared on the broadcast, including a duet featuring Jennifer Nettles and Rihanna. Zac Brown Band, known for its kinetic live shows, will be joined by special guests that will be announced later.
