Game On Dude made early favorite for Breeders' Cup

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) ? Game On Dude was made the early 9-5 favorite in a field of 12 for the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic, a race he led most of the way last year before being overtaken in the closing strides. This time, he'll have home-field advantage running at Santa Anita, where the 5-year-old gelding is 5-0.

He will try to deliver a first-time victory in the Classic for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, who holds a strong hand heading into the two-day, $25 million world championships. Baffert has finished second twice, including last year.

"He's a better horse this year," Baffert said Monday, when Game On Dude drew the No. 5 post for the 1 1/4-mile Classic. "He seems more relaxed. He's getting better with age."

Baffert is taking two shots at winning the $2 million Juvenile with Power Broker and Title Contender. They'll be facing stiff competition in undefeated Shanghai Bobby, the 2-1 favorite trained by Todd Pletcher. The Juvenile winner is typically tagged as the winter favorite for the Kentucky Derby.

Shanghai Bobby was one of nine New York-based horses scheduled to arrive Tuesday, but the flight has been pushed back to Wednesday because of superstorm Sandy, which slammed into the New York metropolitan area Monday.

Game On Dude, co-owned by retired Los Angeles Dodgers manager Joe Torre, heads a field of 12 for the Classic. With Rafael Bejarano replacing Chantal Sutherland in the saddle, the gelding will try to win after getting beaten by Drosselmeyer last year at Churchill Downs.

Flat Out and Whitney winner Fort Larned were the 5-1 co-second choices. Ron the Greek was made the 6-1 third choice.

Trainer Bill Mott, who swept the Ladies' Classic and the Classic last year, is saddling three horses in Saturday's Classic ? Flat Out, Ron the Greek and To Honor and Serve, the 8-1 co-fourth choice with Mucho Macho Man. Flat Out drew the No. 2 post; Ron the Greek got post 10; and To Honor and Serve got post 12.

"Perfect," said Mott, who was on his way from New York via Miami on Monday. "They're good. The post positions are fine."

In the Juvenile, Shanghai Bobby will be ridden by Rosie Napravnik, who has been aboard for each of the 2-year-old colt's four victories this year. She could join Julie Krone as the only women to win a Breeders' Cup race in the event's 28-year history. Shanghai Bobby will face eight rivals in the 1 1/16-mile race.

Royal Delta, the defending Ladies' Classic champion trained by Mott, sustained a minor cut on her right thigh while being loaded on a flight from upstate New York on Monday. He said the cut was stitched up and she should be fine.

"It's no different than a hockey player getting a little cut on his forehead and getting stitched up," Mott said. "They're athletes."

Royal Delta was entered in the Ladies' Classic instead of running against the boys in the Classic on Saturday. She is the 9-5 favorite under Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, who won last year's Classic on Drosselmeyer.

Awesome Feather, undefeated in 10 career starts, was the 3-1 second choice; undefeated My Miss Aurelia and Britain-bred Questing were the 4-1 co-third choices in the field of eight.

Royal Delta was among 17 horses arriving Monday after their flight was moved ahead eight hours to a 1 a.m. EDT departure to beat Sandy. The flight was moved from an airport on Long Island to Newburgh, N.Y., to avoid strong winds ahead of the storm.

Trainer Dale Romans said Pacific Classic winner Dullahan will run in the $3 million Turf rather than the Classic, where he had been pre-entered. Arlington Million winner Little Mike, also trained by Romans, will go in the Turf after being considered for the $2 million Mile.

The world championships open Friday with six races. Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino owns South Floyd, who drew post four in the seven-horse $500,000 Juvenile Sprint.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees co-owns Worth Repeating in the $500,000 Marathon, which drew a full field of 14.

Saturday's nine races include the $1 million Turf Sprint, with Mizdirection among the 16-horse field. He's co-owned by sports talk radio host Jim Rome.

TiVo Premiere fall update starts rolling out with more HD menu screens and a few other tweaks

We got an early peek at some of the newly revamped menus from TiVo's fall update a few days ago, and now the company has announced it is officially rolling out to retail Premiere DVRs, with cable-provided boxes getting the update at some point in the future. Those on the priority list are first up so some TiVo Community posters report they've already received it and can confirm the Netflix app is "still terrible." Besides the upgraded screens for Season Pass Manager, To Do List, History and My Shows (beyond the new look, they each have gained a few new features), Parental controls has replaced KidZone settings, there are some new games in the apps menu and users can name their DVR in the menus. Hit the source link to check out the full list of changes,

Creating More Survivors With Local Cancer Research | NBC 4i

As we near the end of breast cancer awareness month, we are taking a look at some of the progress taking place right in our backyard.

As we near the end of breast cancer awareness month, we are taking a look at some of the progress taking place right in our backyard. From research, to clinical trials, to new therapies, more and more people are surviving because of the work being done at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center ? Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital.

NBC4's Robyn Haines shares one woman's story, as she does her part to make a difference.

High school physical education teacher Jodi Brown is a breast cancer survivor. She was diagnosed in 2009 at just 32-years-old.

She had chemo, radiation, and surgery to get rid of the disease but she wanted to do more. Her treatment all started with Doctor Ramaswamy at The James.??

"This is what motivates me in the whole cancer world, she sat down, grabbed my hand and she goes you have breast cancer and you're going to be a survivor one day and you can help somebody out," said Jodi.

So this year, cancer free and thriving, Jodi created her own 5k to raise money for the Stefanie Spielman fund, $23,000 to help researchers, like her own doctor, create options for future generations.

Right now, Doctor Ramaswamy is working on a possible new therapy for Tamoxifen-resistant breast cancer cells. Tamoxifen is a pill that has long been used to treat cancer that depends on estrogen to grow.

"What is novel about what we have done is a very unique pathway, called hedgehog pathway, cells that are resistant to Tamoxifen, breast cancer cells, this pathway is very highly activated,? said Dr. Ramaswamy.

So they are now pushing toward a clinical trial for an "anti-hedgehog" pill -- a way to stop the cancer cells from becoming resistant to the drug. Researchers are also working on new ways to combat triple negative breast cancer, rare and aggressive, with very few treatment options.

"We are looking at the same hedgehog compound and we've found some very interesting data there as well as far as triple negative as a target,"?said Dr. Ramaswamy.???

They're also looking into PARP inhibitors to treat triple negative, which focuses on DNA repair in the diseased cells.

The doctor goes on to say that the problem with finding a cure for cancer is that a cancer cell is not constant, and never will be.

So every time we get closer, the cell changes and finds a way to get around our treatments.

Experts and survivors say a large problem that needs to be addressed is getting better at prevention, finding out why we get cancer in the first place.

Chrysler 3Q profit nearly doubles

(AP) ? Chrysler nearly doubled its third-quarter profit as it continues to post big U.S. sales increases.

The company says it made $381 million last quarter. That's up 80 percent from the $212 million it made a year earlier.

The profit was due mainly to a 13 percent U.S. sales increase for the quarter.

Chrysler gets three-quarters of its business from the U.S. Unlike other automakers, it sells few cars in Europe and isn't being hurt by the economy there.

Chrysler says second-quarter revenue increased 18 percent $13.1 billion.

Search Engine Marketing Makes Your Small Business a Success ...

This is a guest post by Michelle from www.crazypayday.co.uk.

With the internet market increasing in size each day there are numerous new businesses appearing and posing potential threats to existing small firms. The Internet offers the largest platform for all business owners to promote their brands worldwide and search engine marketing (SEM) plays a significant role in it.? Therefore is very important for business owners to create an online presence by promoting their brand and attracting good traffic towards their website. Incorporating Search engine marketing in marketing strategies is the most efficient method to gain an online presence for your brand in the e-commerce world.

SEM is basically a marketing strategy that helps the online business owners to increase the usability and visibility of their website and attract a good amount of visitors towards their website. There are different techniques that are used in the search engine marketing process that include the following;-

keyword selection:

In this marketing strategy the business owners employ techniques to associate the website with relevant and specific keywords. This is considered the first step of the marketing strategy where different keywords that are used for the website are analysed and the one that is most relevant and unique is targeted to increase the traffic of the website.

Website saturation:

In this method the presence of the website on the search engine is determined. This is achieved by checking the

  • site saturation- the number of website pages that are indexed by the crawlers
  • site popularity- the number of backlinks associated to the website

key performance indicators (KPI):

Here you need to identify the most important KPIs for your site and frequently monitor them. These indicators usually include the number of site visits, number of visits made from organic keyword traffic, number of visits made from paid keyword traffic and many more.

PPC advertising:

Pay per click advertising has become one of the most important marketing strategies that help with improving the ranking of the site on the search engines. Successful and top companies provide advertising space on their website associated to relevant keywords. All the advertisers need to do is to pay them for the number of clicks that are made on the advertising. Through this method potential customers visit your site and most of them turn into return customers.

Paid inclusion in search engines:

Here a particular amount is paid to the search engine providers for the inclusion of your website advertising into their search results. This allows your advertisement to be displayed on the top of the search results which can help you in attracting good traffic for your site.

If you find any difficulty in the above mentioned process and need further guidance then you can contact the experts from digital media agency who can help you out.

Book Review: Eighty Days Blue by Vina Jackson - Blogcritics Books

I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this series, Eighty Days Yellow, so I was looking forward to this one, too. It continues the story of?Summer Zahova and?Dominik, an unpredictable, fiery, dom/sub couple.

Summer is now living in New York, many, many miles away from Dominik, who is still in London. She's a violinist with a major orchestra, which she enjoys very much. Under the tutelage of her talented and attractive conductor, her career goes from strength to strength. However, the rise of her career does not help her love life one bit. The distance between her and Dominik, although physically diminished, grows emotionally. Can the two of them overcome their multiple issues, or does this spell the end of the road for them?

Although this book wasn't quite as enjoyable as the first in the series, it was still very good. I enjoyed the physical and emotional journeys the characters went on, and the twists and turns in the plot. I'm very interested to see where the next book takes Summer and Dominik.

Overall, if you're looking for a new erotic romance series to get your teeth into, you should check out the Eighty Days books--but make sure you read them in order.

How hurricane Sandy tests Obama, Romney

Both candidates have suspended campaigning for now, though Obama surrogates haven't. The president needs to handle the storm well, while Romney has to be careful not to politicize the event.

President Obama enters the White House Briefing Room in Washington Monday to brief reporters on national preparations for hurricane Sandy.

Eight days before voters go to the polls, a strengthening hurricane Sandy has blown the presidential campaign off course. Both President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney have canceled appearances. Both are directing their supporters to donate to the Red Cross. Early voting has been suspended in some states. ?

But make no mistake, politics stops for almost nothing this close to Election Day. Campaigns ads are still running on TV. And even as both candidates focus on hurricane preparedness, their campaigns are also continuing to press their advantages and seek to minimize the potential political losses that could come from the mammoth East Coast storm.

For Mr. Obama, the potential upside comes as he reverts to his day job as president, projecting authority as he addresses the storm. In an appearance in the White House briefing room early Monday afternoon, Obama urged people in the path of the storm to obey to local authorities, and evacuate if instructed. He didn?t mention the election until asked by a reporter.

?I am not worried at this point about the impact on the election,? Obama said. ?I?m worried about the impact on families, and I?m worried about the impact on our first responders. I?m worried about the impact on our economy and on transportation.??

But the storm carries a political risk for Obama. If something major goes wrong in the response, it will be on his head.

?He does not want to be an echo to President George W. Bush's response to hurricane Katrina, which became a symbol of incompetence,? writes Princeton historian Julian Zelizer at CNN.com.

If Obama stumbles over storm response this close to the election, it could seal his fate on Nov. 6. So Mr. Romney could benefit, but only if the president is seen to fail. Romney could also hurt himself if he comes across as overtly political.

?[T]here is little that Mitt Romney can do, other than watch to see what people think of Obama's response,? Mr. Zelizer says, ?because any statement from him could easily become seen as political and offer little evidence of his own ability to lead.?

Romney proceeded Monday with a midday campaign event in Avon Lake, Ohio, but canceled an evening event in Wisconsin. The campaign also canceled two events Monday in Florida by Rep. Paul Ryan, his running mate. All Tuesday events for both candidates have been canceled.

?Governor Romney believes this is a time for the nation and its leaders to come together to focus on those Americans who are in harm?s way,? said Gail Gitcho, Romney?s communications director, in a statement.

Or so she says...: Common Foster Care Concerns & Why I Do It (she ...

Hi, I?m Mary.? My life has been greatly blessed because of adoption and foster care.? My husband and I adopted our daughter through a private agency when she was a newborn and we have welcomed six foster children into our home over the past six years.? We hope to add more children into our family (either temporarily or permanently) through foster care and adoption.

In between diapers and carpooling I enjoy getting lost in a good book, spending time outdoors, and? catching up in my scrapbooking endeavors (which are always perpetually behind! )? ?I am passionate about child welfare and hope to return to school in the future for a Master?s Degree in Social Work .?

Three of the most common things I hear from people when they learn we are foster parents are:

1) I Could Never Do Foster Care!

2) Isn't it hard to have to say goodbye to your foster children after becoming attached?

and

3) WHY did You Decide to do Foster Care- Was it in the Hopes of Adopting?

This post is dedicated to anyone who has brought up any of these questions...

I Could Never Do Foster Care

I don't think it's so much a question of not being able to do it as it is of having the desire to do it, and more specifically, the reasons WHY somebody would want to do it.

I used to think that I could never be able to do foster care, either. I'm much too tender-hearted and the thought of dealing with reunifications seemed too painful for me to bear . . . which leads me to the second most asked question:

Isn't it hard to have to say goodbye to a child after become attached? Yes, it is hard. But despite the heartache of having to say goodbye WE HAVE LIVED THROUGH IT!

In fact, when we were going through the initial training to become licensed our trainer said, "After your first placement leaves your home you may feel like your heart is being ripped out- but you need to remember that the pain you feel is just a measure of how much you have cared. If it doesn't hurt when they leave, then you haven't done your job"

I think that the bottom line of doing foster care is that you must be willing to put your desires and feelings on the back burner and turn your focus to the needs and feelings of a child. If someone is not willing to do that, then I would strongly encourage them to re-examine their motives for doing foster care in the first place.

Because I'm only human, I've been guilty of losing that focus [on the child and what is best for the child] and have ended up feeling unappreciated or resentful at times of how "the system" works. On occasion I've even caught myself throwing my hands into the air in frustration and asking, "Now WHY did we decide to do foster care in the first place?"

Which inevitably leads me to the next most common question/assumption:

Why did you decide to do foster care . . . Is it so that you can adopt?

To answer this question in one sentence I'll tell you: We became foster parents because we "felt" like we were supposed to. It wasn't a question of logic or convenience, but out of blind faith.

I first started having strong feelings about doing foster care when we had been married for about four years. At that point in time we had wanted children but didn't have any, so I'll admit that in the back of my mind I was hoping that these promptings would result in an adoption- it just made sense: we were a childless couple and we were getting strong messages about doing foster care.

However . . . one thing I've learned about how inspiration works in my life is that I am seldom given all of the reasons or explanations for WHY God wants me to do something all at once. Instead I find myself speculating, over-analyzing and sometimes even second-guessing these promptings when I should be listening, trusting and OBEYING!

I wish I could say that we followed those promptings right away, but the truth is that we kept putting them off and coming up with excuses of why foster care was too hard, too weird (unconventional is probably a less offensive word to use), too illogical, etc.

I also wish that I could tell you that our decision to do foster care has resulted in the adoption of a child through the foster care system, but it hasn't. We have fostered?six children and all of them have returned to their parents or relative's care.

When people learn that we haven't been able to adopt any of our foster placements many feel sorry for us or think "What a waste of time!" But perhaps those same people don't fully understand that we have been blessed by doing what God has asked of us regardless of the end result. Fostering children has helped us to develop greater patience, love, and selflessness. We've been blessed to have children in our home as part of our family, even if it is just on a temporary basis.

Aside from the blessings fostering has brought into our lives, our experiences have helped us to re-learn that life isn't always about US or having OUR NEEDS and DESIRES met, but it's about REACHING OUT TO OTHERS, in this case the children.

Consider this pertinent statement from a fellow foster mother about her decision to do foster care and her source of strength through it all.

"Sometimes (actually often) if we are listening, God asks us to do things that are hard. He asks us to do things that hurt. He asks us to take risks for His kingdom. He asks us to be used in ways that don't make sense to the world, so that the only explanation is Him . . . It is God's strength, and His love he has put into our hearts for these kids, that keeps us refreshed."

?Amen. So beautifully put.
?~ Mary

Earnings Preview: Facebook posts 3Q results Tues.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Facebook Inc. will report its third-quarter earnings results ? the second as a public company ? on Tuesday after the stock market closes. With its stock trading at less than half of its initial public offering price, the online social networking company has been working to grow its advertising revenue without alienating its 1 billion users.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Online advertising rival Google Inc.'s disappointing results, announced prematurely last Thursday, dragged Facebook's stock lower too. Google's ad revenue grew at the slowest pace in three years in the July-September quarter, which some investors took as a sign that Facebook could see a slowdown too.

Susquehanna analyst Herman Leung thinks a big area of focus will be Facebook's progress in mobile advertising. Facebook only recently started showing ads, which it calls "sponsored stories," on mobile devices. The challenge with small screens is showing the ads without annoying users.

The company has launched several new products and features recently that could boost revenue growth. These include the Facebook Exchange, which lets advertisers target users in real-time, based on outside websites they visit. So if you visit a store's website, you might see ads from them on Facebook. A gifts feature, meanwhile, lets users buy physical gifts for their friends through their Facebook account. Investors will be looking for updates on how these and other new features have fared.

Leung said he'll also be listening for an update on new ways for advertisers to measure how well their ads are working on Facebook. He has a "Positive" rating on Facebook and a target price of $32.

Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia, meanwhile, notes that looming expirations of post-IPO lockup periods could weigh on Facebook's stock as employees start selling their shares.

"That said, we think the sentiment on the stock is already quite negative and we believe the long-term opportunity for (Facebook) remains very large," he added. He kept a "Buy" rating and $26 price target.

WHY IT MATTERS: Facebook is the dominant social networking company in the world, with more than 1 billion users. Its results are a gauge of the health of social media companies, as well as the overall online advertising environment.

WHAT'S EXPECTED: Analysts, on average, are expecting earnings of 11 cents per share on revenue of $1.23 billion, according to FactSet. Facebook has not given an outlook.

LAST YEAR'S QUARTER: Facebook was still a private company. It had net income of $227 million and revenue of $954 million in the third quarter of 2011.

Clashes as Kosovo opposition protests over Serbia talks

PRISTINA (Reuters) - Police in Kosovo fired teargas and made dozens of arrests on Monday in clashes with opposition activists demonstrating against a new push by the European Union to improve ties between Serbia and its former southern province.

The unrest followed a meeting last week in Brussels between Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci and his Serbian counterpart, Ivica Dacic.

It was the first meeting at such a level since majority-Albanian Kosovo declared independence in 2008.

The EU says the two must normalize relations and solve a range of practical problems arising from Serbia's refusal to recognize Kosovo if they are to make further progress towards membership of the bloc.

But hardliners in Kosovo say they have nothing to discuss with Serbia, which was bombed by NATO in 1999 to halt the killing and expulsion of ethnic Albanians by Serb forces under late strongman Slobodan Milosevic during a two-year counter-insurgency war.

Chanting "thieves" and "shame", up to 200 activists of the opposition Vetevendosje (Self-determination) party tried to blockade Thaci's office in protest at his meeting with Dacic, who was Milosevic's wartime spokesman.

A banner read, "No bargain with Serbia!"

Police drove them back with pepper spray and teargas. Sixty people were arrested and 18 officers were injured when protesters pelted them with stones, police said.

"This was a shameful meeting (in Brussels)," said Vetevendosje deputy leader Shpend Ahmeti. "After all the crimes in Kosovo, no one has taken responsibility or apologized."

The party said several activists were beaten by police and treated in hospital.

EU-mediated talks are expected to resume in November, focusing on a range of practical problems arising from the lack of diplomatic relations, such as energy supplies, a telephone country code for Kosovo and management of their joint border.

The most contentious issue will be Kosovo's north, a mainly Serb-populated region propped up by Belgrade in a de facto ethnic partition of the country.

Thaci called the protesters "isolated voices".

"The voices of these individuals are always opposed to progress in Kosovo and they follow the same agenda as the opponents of Kosovo's independence," he told a cabinet meeting.

The EU, which made Serbia a candidate for membership of the bloc in March, wants Belgrade to loosen its grip on the north, but the Serbs there refuse to have anything to do with Thaci's government in Pristina and function largely as part of the Serbian state.

Kosovo has been recognized by more than 90 countries, including the United States and 22 of the EU's 27 members.

Serbia, backed by U.N. Security Council veto holder Russia, says it will never recognize the territory of 1.7 million people as sovereign.

Examining The Two Major Groups Of People Who Tend To Show ...

You are here: Home / Tea / Examining The Two Major Groups Of People Who Tend To Show Interest In Buying Teapots

There are some two groups of people who tend to show interest in buying teapots. These are, in other words, the two groups of people that anybody who is involved in a teapot marketing venture should target. This is our chance to acquaint ourselves with this person and, in the process, find out the philosophy behind their teapot purchasing habits. This sort of information is likely to prove useful to people who are involved in teapot marketing ventures. Even those who are working behind the scenes, particularly in the manufacture and design of teapots, would also find a lot of information that they could use.

Let us look at the first group, which is composed of people who refer to themselves as household managers. These are people who buy the said utensils with the objective of using them in the domestic setting. It is rare for you to find a western household that does not have at least one teapot in it. A household manager, as the phrase implies, is one who is responsible for running the household in a smooth manner. Often, this is the household?s breadwinner. Sometimes, the household manager may delegate the task of buying a teapot to someone else within the household. Either he sends the household help, or maybe even another member of his family, to go and make the purchase in his stead.

They could decide to buy a teapot for their household for many reasons. Maybe they are motivated by the desire to have a completely stocked and equipped kitchen and household, so they have to have all the necessary utensils. People tend to feel as though something is missing in a home if there is no teapot or some other kitchen utensil. There is also the utilitarian factor involved. People need a teapot so there is a need to buy one. Old teapots becoming irreparable or succumbing to wear and tear is one reason. People moving in and increasing the number of occupants in one household that there is a need for more teapots ? or a bigger one, at least ? is called for, is yet another.

The second group of people who tend to show interest in buying teapots is that of hospitality industry actors. Here, we could be looking at restaurant owners, hoteliers, coffee bar owners and other such business people: who often have to buy these utensils for business use. A teapot is essential in the operations of businesses like these, so if you are planning on going into this venture, make sure a teapot is included in your list of tools that you should have. Growing businesses would also feel the need to replace their existing teapots. This is also true when frequent usage and the simple passage of time would render a teapot in need of a replacement.

If you compare the teapots used for business and those used in domestic settings, you will find that there are differences, especially when it comes to size and design. It is also interesting to note that a business manager shopping for a teapot for his business would adapt a different shopping style from that of a household manager who is simply looking for a teapot to be used in his or her home.

Mobile phones CAN cause brain tumours, court rules in landmark ...

  • Businessman Innocente Marcolini, 60, diagnosed with brain tumour after using his mobile phone at work for up to six hours a day for 12 years
  • Italy?s Supreme Court found a ?causal link? between his phone use and illness
  • Experts predict more legal claims from victims after landmark ruling

A court has ruled that mobile phones can give you cancer in a landmark case that could open the gates for other victims to take legal action.

Businessman Innocente Marcolini, 60, was diagnosed with a brain tumour after using his mobile phone at work for up to six hours a day for 12 years.

Italy?s Supreme Court found that there was a ?causal link? between his phone use and his illness.

Experts now predict a barrage of legal claims by victims who believe their own illness was caused by their use of mobile phones.

Mr Marcolini told The Sun newspaper: ?This is significant for very many people. I wanted this problem to become public because many people still do not know the risks.

?I was on the phone, usually the mobile, for at least five or six hours every day at work. I wanted it recognised that there was a link between my illness and the use of mobile and cordless phones.

?Parents need to know their children are at risk of this illness.?

Oncologist and professor of environmental mutagenesis Angelo Gino Levis and neurosurgeon Dr Giuseppe Grasso gave evidence supporting Mr Marcolini?s claim.

They argued that mobile and cordless phones emit electromagnetic radiation causing damage to cells and increasing the risk of tumours. But they added that many tumours don?t appear for 15 years making short-term studies on mobile phone use redundant.

The jury is still out, however, for many scientists who claim it is still unknown what, if any, link there is between mobiles and brain tumours.?

Earlier on this month, a Danish study on more than 358,000 mobile users over 18-years-old found that those who used mobile phones for 10 years or more were no more at risk than those who never used them.

Researchers led by the Institute of Cancer Epidemiology in Copenhagen found cancer rates in the central nervous system were almost the same in both long-term mobile phone users and non-users.

But other scientists disagreed, saying the Danish study excluded business users and included as non-users people who began using mobiles later on.

The big debate: The jury is still out for many scientists who argue there is no evidence to support a link between cancer and mobile phone use

The big debate: The jury is still out for many scientists who argue there is no evidence to support a link between cancer and mobile phone use

Denis Henshaw, Emeritus Professor of Human Radiation Effects, Bristol University said the study was ?worthless?, and the researchers themselves admitted non-users may have been misclassified which would bias the findings.

He said: ?This seriously flawed study misleads the public and decision makers about the safety of mobile phone use.?

Professor Henshaw has previously advocated cigarette-style warnings on mobile phone packets and urges more independent research.

He said: ?Vast numbers of people are using mobile phones and they could be a time bomb of health problems ? not just brain tumours, but also fertility, which would be a serious public health issue.

?The health effects of smoking alcohol and air pollution are well known and well talked about, and it?s entirely reasonable we should be openly discussing the evidence for this, but it is not happening.

?We want to close the door before the horse has bolted.?

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) rang alarm bells last year when it classified mobile phones as ?possibly carginogenic?.

In April, The Children with Cancer conference highlighted figures published by the Office of National Statistics, which showed a 50 per cent increase in frontal and temporal lobe tumours between 1999 and 2009.

The ONS figures showed that the incident rate has risen from two to three per 100,000 people since 1999, while figures from Bordeaux Segalen University showed a one to two per cent annual increase in brain cancers in children.

But earlier this year another study by Manchester University researchers found no statistically significant change in rates of newly diagnosed brain cancers in England between 1998 and 2007 ? saying it was unlikely ?we are on the forefront of a brain cancer epidemic?.

?UHDS? Katie Van Winkle, an assistant coordinator for room management, was?featured in a front page article in OSU?s student newspaper (The Daily Barometer) on Thursday, Oct. 18.

[The Daily Barometer, Oct. 18, 2012] ??Just four minutes before the deadline Katie Van Winkle hit submit, entering her piece, titled ?Speak Up,? into the Muhammad Ali Writing Award on Ethics competition. Little did she know the 10-page narrative that took her only three hours to write would become a finalist and receive an honorable mention in the?Sala?Kryszek?Writing and Art Competition.
A self-professed ?shy writer,? Van Winkle began to develop her voice and writing style in the seventh grade when her English teacher, now mentor, Charles Sanderson, took notice of her special talent. He encouraged and pushed her to enter writing pieces into state and national writing competitions.

?Sanderson made me more willing to experiment with my writing,? Van Winkle said.

Last spring, it was Sanderson who gave Van Winkle the information about a writing contest sponsored by the Muhammad Ali Center. This national writing competition is held annually and offers awards to college students who honor and uphold Muhammad Ali?s legacy of living a life dedicated to high ethical standards.

Among the judges for this contest was?Elie?Wiesel. Esteemed author and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Wiesel has made a huge impact on Katie?s life. After reading ?Night,? Wiesel?s memoir about his experience during the Holocaust, Van Winkle began to understand the impact that stories and writing can have on others.

Van Winkle cherishes the opportunity to be judged by Wiesel.

?I feel really honored, he spoke up for his experiences and what he believes in,? Van Winkle said. ?I read ?Night,? in high school and learned so much from it. I feel humbled and honored. I?d [like to] ask him about courage, about the importance of speaking up for the things that you believe in.?

This competition and experience has given her confidence in her writing and in the knowledge she can make a difference with her words.

Van Winkle has made a difference. When she received news from Sanderson that the book, ?The House on Mango Street,? by Sandra Cisneros, was going to be pulled from her old school?s approved book list because it was considered to contain inappropriate content and language, she jumped into action.

She wrote an essay titled ?Saving Mango Street,? which was published in the magazine ?Rethinking Schools,? that then launched a letter writing campaign on Facebook. Van Winkle testified to the school board. Her efforts were successful. Van Winkle was able to help save the book that Sanderson had taught to her class years ago.

?[It] allowed the opportunity for valuable teaching moments about domestic abuse, violence against women and speaking out,? Van Winkle said.

Her winning essay ? ?Speak Out? ? was a narrative tying together her personal experience with sexual abuse, her involvement with CARDVA (Center Against Rape & Domestic Violence) and her efforts to save ?The House on Mango Street.? This ethics essay on women?s violence held a powerful message about speaking up and standing strong.

?If you don?t talk about it, people don?t know and can?t help,? Van Winkle said. ?I don?t want people to feel like it?s their fault or that they can?t talk about it or that they are alone.?

Looking to the future, Van Winkle says that she wants to become a counselor and to work with women and children who have been affected by domestic violence. She plans to continue to express herself and to communicate through writing.

?It is easier to communicate through writing verses statistics or numbers; writing really gets people to think [about] things or to change or to react,? Van Winkle said.

Those who have a story to tell, need someone to talk to or have experienced sexual abuse can contact CARDVA or CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services).

?Basically, everybody has a story,? Van Winkle said.

Denied dream wedding site, lesbian couple files complaint

By NBC News staff and The Associated Press

Two?New York state women who were denied their dream wedding site because they are gay have filed a discrimination complaint that?could set a precedent for whether businesses can choose their clientele.

The complaint with the state Division of Human Rights appears to be a first involving a wedding venue since same-sex marriage became legal in New York in July 2011, according to advocates on both sides of the issue. One prominent gay marriage opponent said the case could test the breadth of the law's religious freedom language.

Melisa Erwin and Jennie McCarthy, both 29 and of Albany, filed the complaint on Oct. 11 after Liberty Ridge Farm said they would not host their wedding next summer. The two women have been together for three years, according to WNYT-TV.

When the owners, Robert and Cynthia Gifford, found out they were gay, they refused to book their wedding.?

Erwin told WNYT-TV's Abigail Bleck that Cynthia Gifford said that when she found out, ?Well, now we have a problem.?

?When we asked why,? Erwin said,?Cynthia Gifford replied, ?My husband and I have been married a really long time and it?s great that you?re getting married, but you can?t do it here.?

Robert Gifford told WNYT-TV: ?I think it?s our right to choose who we market to, like any business.?

The farm has refused to allow two gay couples to get married at their venue, WNYT-TV reported.

?We are a family business and we feel we ought to stay down the family path,? Gifford said.

The couple is no longer considering the farm as a wedding venue, but McCarthy said, "we just want to know that the policy is being changed to fit the laws so this doesn't happen to anyone else."

People took to Liberty Ridge Farm?s Facebook page to post messages of disgust or support.

Wrote one commenter beneath images of a family harvest event: ?Stay on the family path. These are individuals who have no respect for Christian beliefs or moral beliefs. You done the right thing. They are the ones that are in the wrong.?

New York law exempts some religious-oriented institutions from having to accommodate same-sex weddings.

But Attorney David Fallon told WNYT-TV the law does not allow a ?place of public accommodation? to discriminate but that judges haven?t interpreted the law.

?It seems like the women would have a strong argument that it is a place of public accommodation,? Fallon said.

If state officials determine there is a case of discrimination, they can order Liberty Ridge to take appropriate action and can set monetary damages. The division's administrative determination can be appealed to state courts.

There is at least one similar court case in New York. In September, a gay couple in Manhattan filed a lawsuit against a restaurant they allege canceled their?rehearsal dinner and refused to cater their wedding after a manager said he did not want any "gay parties." The restaurant disputes the claim.

In August, a Vermont inn agreed to pay a $10,000 civil penalty to that state's Human Rights Commission and to place $20,000 in a charitable trust to settle a lawsuit that accused the business of refusing to host a wedding reception for two women.

Back in New York, Erwin emphasized on WNYT-TV?s Facebook page that she and McCarthy are not suing.

?We are not seeking compensation,? she said. ?We are seeking a change in policy.?
