South Africa: Rhino horns poisoned to thwart poachers

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa ? The owner of an exotic game reserve in South Africa has taking a drastic step in a bid to prevent rhino poaching: he has injected his rhinos' horns with poison.

Damian Vergnaud, owner of?Inverdoorn reserve near Cape Town, said he approached scientists and a vet to work towards finding a substance that would deter poachers.

A record number of rhinos have been killed for their horns this year in South Africa, which has more rhinos than any other country.?The poaching is fueled by demand for rhino horns in Vietnam?and other Asian countries, where they are used in traditional medicine despite the fact that experts say they have no medicinal value.

More from GlobalPost: South Africa: rhino poaching at record high

Vergnaud told the South African Press Association that he decided not to dehorn his rhinos, like some game reserves have done, because it is "very painful" and "traumatizing" for the animals.

"I really wanted to create a different defense system," he told SAPA.

In tests,?Vergnaud injected his rhinos' horns with ?a combination of three non-lethal substances: one with a terrible taste, one to make a horn visible on an X-ray machine, and one that is a dye, the same dye used to foil cash-in-transit robbers.?

"We hope that it will inform poachers, it [poaching at the reserve] is going to be a waste of time," Vergnaud said.

Vergnaud has offered to share his home-brewed poacher repellent with other game reserve owners looking to protect this endangered animal.

Kawakami: NFL Picks, Week 16: Christmas Eve on the road, I’m picking against both 49ers and Raiders

The locals are both on the road, in the most hostile divisional environments, on Christmas Eve.

It will take a lot of gumption and skill to get through these (vs. the spread).

Probably too much.

Straight to the picks?

1.??KAWAKAMI?(last week 2-1, overall 27-14-4)/

* KANSAS CITY -1.5, over Raiders. My comment: The Silver & Black team that last week couldn?t stop the Detroit Lions from scoring two TDs in the last five minutes, at home, with the playoffs on the line? probably won?t be able to buck up on a holiday in a chilly stadium against a rallying Chiefs team.

The Chiefs D is just a bad match-up for Carson Palmer?s offense, especially without Darren McFadden; and Kyle Orton gives the KC offense a decent chance to score some points, not that they?ll need too much.

I?m guessing something like KC 17, Raiders 13.

* SEATTLE +2.5, over 49ers. My comment: Another grinding short-week road trip for the 49ers, who may not match up great with the Seahawks, anyway. Well, other than the fact that the Seahawks? QB is Tarvaris Jackson, of course.

Remember, the 49ers didn?t exactly over-power the Seahawks in Week 1, at Candlestick (except for Ted Ginn?s two kick-returns). And that was on full rest?this time the 49ers played a double-delayed Monday night game and have to fly to Seattle, which gives the Seahawks almost 2 full days of extra preparation time.

The 49ers might win this, but it will be at the wire: Something like 21-20.

* HOUSTON -6.5, over Indianapolis. My comment: The Colts got their ?W? and the Texans took their bad loss last week. That stuff happens in the NFL. But then things usually turn around in the next week, and I?ll take Houston big in this one.

2.?POOLE?(last week 2-0-1, overall 26-14-5)/

-Picks TBA.

T3.?RYAN?(last week 1-2, overall 27-15-3)/

* KANSAS CITY -1.5, over Raiders. Ryan comment: Not just against the Packers, but the Chiefs are playing inspired ball of late. The Raiders? aren?t.

* 49ERS -2.5, over Seattle. Ryan comment: Having learned their lesson against Arizona, the 49ers go full-power to the finish line. They need it, too, for the first-round bye.

* DENVER -3, over Buffalo. Ryan comment: Tebow.

?

?

T3. BACH (last week 2-1, overall 27-15-3)/

-Picks TBA.

5.?PURDY?(last week 2-1, overall 20-21-4)/

* RAIDERS + 1.5, over Kansas City. Purdy comment: Such a psychotic team, these Silver and Blackists. Desperation should get them this win, setting up the heart-disintegrating defeat and playoff elimination in the season finale against San Diego.

* SEATTLE?+2.5, over 49ers. Purdy comment: Seahawks have even more to play for in this one?than the 49ers. Not to mention the revenge in Pete Carroll?s soul.

* CINCINNATI -4, over Arizona. Purdy comment: Cincy needs it and birds of the desert never thrive in Ohio winters.

6. KILLION (last week 2-1, overall 20-22-3)/

-Picks TBA.

??-My extra stuff?

I?ll make Kansas City -2.5 over the Raiders my 5-star pick. Last week, I missed my 6-star play with the NY Jets. Overall, I?m +52 stars on the season.

I?ll make New England -9.5 over Miami my Special Non-Counting Bonus Pick. Last week, I hit my SNCBP with New Orleans. Overall, I?m 8-7 on SNCBPs.

READ FIRST: Want Feedback? JUST ASK!

Howdy-hey, guys and gals! Your friendly neighborhood Sato here.

Pending some restructuring and changes here in the Creative Realm, if you want your piece to be reviewed, all you have to do is ask!

This makes getting constructive criticism an opt-in system, rather than opt-out.

It will prevent a WIP (Work-In-Progress) piece from getting unwarranted attention. If you want no one to comment, put "WIP" somewhere either in the title of your post, or in the body somewhere.

Easy-peasy as that!

Again! If you want your piece to receive some sort of constructive criticism, you must ask. Otherwise, it will be treated as a WIP and left alone!

Thanks for reading!

Scheduled home auctions hit 9-month high in Nov.

(AP) ? Fewer U.S. homes entered the foreclosure process or were taken back by banks in November, reflecting a seasonal pullback in foreclosure activity by lenders and mortgage servicers.

But for some homeowners already behind on their mortgage payments, the end-of-year slowdown isn't likely to provide much of a reprieve.

The number of homes in foreclosure and scheduled to be auctioned hit a nine-month high last month, foreclosure listing firm RealtyTrac Inc. said Thursday.

The surge came about because of a spike three months earlier in homes entering the foreclosure process for the first time. And unless those borrowers find a way to get current on their mortgage payments, many of those homes will likely be sold at auction or end up being taken back by the lender.

"Despite a seasonal slowdown similar to what we've seen each of the past four years, November's numbers suggest a new set of incoming foreclosure waves," said RealtyTrac CEO James Saccacio.

All told, foreclosure auctions were scheduled on 96,540 U.S. homes last month, RealtyTrac said. That's up 13 percent from October, but still down 17 percent from November last year.

Some states posted far higher monthly increases in scheduled home auctions last month. In California, they were up 63 percent, while in Washington they climbed 56 percent.

Those homes could end up back on the market as foreclosures or short sales, when a homeowner sells their property for less than what they owe on their mortgage. And that means more pressure on home values, because foreclosures and short sales typically sell for a lot less than other homes.

U.S. foreclosure activity slowed sharply starting in October of last year, after problems surfaced with the way many lenders were handling foreclosures. Specifically, signing off on home foreclosures without first verifying documents ? a practice referred to as "robo-signing."

Many of the nation's largest banks reacted by temporarily ceasing all foreclosures, re-filing previously filed foreclosure cases and revisiting pending cases to prevent errors.

The pace of foreclosure activity continued to slow much of this year as major lenders worked toward a possible settlement of government probes into the industry's mortgage-lending practices.

Those settlement talks, led by a group of state attorneys general, have suffered some setbacks in recent months after officials in California and Massachusetts broke with the rest of the states. There also has been disagreement among the states' prosecutors over what terms to offer the banks.

Still, there have been signals that foreclosure activity will be increasing in coming months.

Banks stepped up action in August against homeowners whose mortgage had gone unpaid. The number of homes receiving an initial notice of default that month jumped 33 percent from July. Default notices also rose between September and October.

That helped set the stage for the sharp increase in scheduled foreclosure auctions last month and will likely contribute to an anticipated bump in home repossessions early next year, Saccacio said.

Home repossessions hit their lowest level since March 2008 last month, according to RealtyTrac. In all, banks took back 56,124 homes last month, down 17 percent from October and from November a year ago.

Banks are now on track to repossess some 810,000 homes this year, down from more than 1 million last year, according to RealtyTrac. The firm had originally anticipated some 1.2 million homes would be repossessed by lenders this year.

High unemployment, a sluggish housing market and falling home values remain a major factor in homeowners falling behind on their mortgage payments. Many borrowers also have simply stopped paying their mortgage because they are underwater ? a term for owing more on a mortgage than the home is worth.

At the end of September, 10.7 million, or 22.1 percent of all U.S. homes with a mortgage, were underwater, according to CoreLogic. And an additional 2.4 million borrowers had less than 5 percent equity in their homes, the firm said.

In all, 224,394 U.S. properties received a foreclosure-related notice last month, down 3 percent from October and down 14 percent from November last year, RealtyTrac said. That amounts to one in every 579 households.

Initial default notices declined 8 percent from October and were down 9 percent from November last year.

At the state level, Nevada had the nation's highest foreclosure rate last month with one in every 175 households receiving a foreclosure notice ? more than three times the national average.

California, which alone accounted for 28 percent of all U.S. homes receiving a foreclosure notice last month, had the second-highest foreclosure rate. Arizona was third.

Rounding out the top 10 states with the highest foreclosure rate in November are Utah, Georgia, Michigan, Florida, Illinois, Ohio and South Carolina.

How Did Rihanna Sneak By Beyonce On Best Artists Of 2011?

It was close, but Rih's ability to remain in the pop-culture consciousness all year places her just above the Queen B.

It was a showdown between two queens of pop — Rihanna and Beyoncé — each vying for a prime spot on MTV's Best Artists of 2011 list. RiRi wound up besting Lady B by a slim margin. But how did she come out on top?

MTV correspondent Sway Calloway moderated a spirited roundtable discussion with some of our very own experts: James Montgomery and Rob Markman (MTV News), Yomi Desalu and Malika Quemerais (MTV Music and Talent) and Tamar Anitai and Nicole James (MTV.com). The panel discussed the artists who ruled 2011, from the Throne and Lil Wayne to Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga. It was during that debate that Beyoncé and Rihanna met in a battle for the #6 position. In the end, Rihanna prevailed, with B taking #7.

"I love Rihanna," Montgomery said. "I think she is the kind of artist that I really like as a pop star who makes really cool, controversial videos and pushes the envelope in every conceivable way."

"She hustled so hard," Anitai added.

After all, Rih did have us buzzing about songs off two albums in 2011. New hits popping from 2010's Loud — including a remix of "S&M" with the one-and-only Britney Spears — ruled the charts in the first half of '11. While some artists would just ride the momentum of that smash album, Rih went back into the studio mid-tour and cranked out Talk That Talk. The first single off TTT, "We Found Love," was a certified dance-pop classic from the minute it hit.

See where "We Found Love" placed on MTV's Best Songs of 2011 countdown!

It was a tough decision for our experts because Knowles had such a remarkable year. Her album 4 — a collection of soulful ballads and mid-tempo tracks tempered with a deep nostalgic streak — was arguably her most mature yet. And she triumphed during intimate, sold-out shows at New York City's Roseland Ballroom in August. B was also responsible for this year's most talked-about (and tweeted about) pop-culture moment, announcing her pregnancy to the world right on our VMA stage.

But it was Rihanna's ability to rule for 365 days straight that was the deciding factor.

"It's very rare that you see an artist that's there, that is consistently there throughout the year that people don't get sick of," Quemerais observed. "I feel like the appetite for Rihanna is constant."

"If you were to go numbers by numbers, Rihanna can go toe-to-toe with anyone on our list," Montgomery reinforced. "She never gets the credit that she deserves."

She certainly got the credit here.
